Safe and secure accommodation

Our two refuges, Mary Smith and Starick House, provide safe and secure accommodation to women and children who are escaping domestic violence. Each refuge accommodates six women and their children.  In 2013/14, 75 women and their 102 children were accommodated in our refuges.

You can read stories from women who have stayed at Mary Smith and Starick House.

The dedicated teams at our two centres work hard to provide an integrated and coordinated service, with the aim of increasing clients' sense of safety and wellbeing. The support provided at our crisis accommodation includes:

  • Information, referral and advocacy
  • Counselling
  • Programs and workshops:
    • Exploring domestic violence and its effects
    • Work readiness
    • Healthy lifestyle and self-care
    • Art therapy

Starick also provides support and programs specifically aimed at the children in Starick's services. Starick was at the forefront of recognising the impact of family and domestic violence on children and developing services and programs to address their needs. Our focus on children continues through the work of our Child Advocates who ensure that the supports and programs offered are effectively meeting the diverse needs of the children living in Starick House and Mary Smith .  Our services for children currently include:

  • Counselling
  • Out-of-school hours and school holiday programs
  • Art therapy
  • Annual Children's Camp
  • Homework support

Support from Starick continues after women and children leave our refuges.
